The Character of Nambour
Kevin Bryant – a Character of Nambour
Did you know Nambour has an honorary Mayor? Although Mark Jamieson is the real mayor, we have Kevie who is the unofficial mayor of Nambour. Walking the streets daily with his top hat, beautiful tie, vest, and a cane he swings around carefully, he is the character behind Nambour.
Kevin was born in Broken Hill Hospital, in New South Wales and has lived in Nambour since 1987. His father was Ross Kevin Bryant who passed away aged 89 years.
Our Kevie shares something with the famous Australian artist Pro Hart aka Kevin Charles who was also born in Broken Hill in 1928. They share the same first name, place of birth and a larger than life character.
Kevie has five sisters – Hazel, Kay, Cathy, Anne, and Muriel. He has one brother – Peter.
When I interviewed Kevin for this article, I asked him lots of questions and in typical Kevie fashion, this is his answer…
Renee: “Did you have a pet when you were a young boy?”
Kevie responded, “Yes, the cat passed away in a car accident.”
Oh, dear this is going to be a long interview!
Kevin attended Bulli Public School in Wollongong, a coastal town during his younger years. He was involved with Flame Tree Church for 17 years and the Anglican Church for 10 years.
In 2003, Kevin along with Kath Ashworth and Ms. Vicky Lee started Retro Rocks Nambour and the Rockabilly Festival. They just completed Retro Festival number four in 2017.
“At this present time, we are looking to start up a Rockabilly venue. There will be music, cars, and fashion. We are also working on a new project called Make Nambour Great Again with Charles Alder who is CEO of Buy a Bale and Darrell Dalton, President of Golf Programs Australia Inc. Many people in Nambour want to share the character and characters of Nambour with the world.”
We are blessed to have Kevie walking the streets, greeting the people, and getting us to reconnect.
He is cool.
