GPAI Creative Cooperative
Social Enterprise Provides Outcomes for the Disabilities Sector
Golf Programs Australia Incorporated opened its doors at Shop 1, 89 Currie Street, Nambour in December 2016. This was a bold step to Drive Inclusion and Break Isolation using golf and creativity.
Known as GPAI Creative Cooperative, the store offers an eclectic range of items including…
- new and pre-loved golf equipment
- re-purposed retro and antique furniture
Products made from high-quality upholstery textiles such as cushions, bags and lots more are also available.
The purpose of the social enterprise ranges from acting as an outreach centre for the isolated to a source for funding the charity’s various golf programs. The store also offers retail and business training for young adults living with an intellectual disability.
Shop manager Michelle Dalton and various volunteers man the cooperative for over 40 hours from Monday to Saturday. They work collaboratively with local artisans who showcase their items in exchange for a percentage of the sale and time spent in the store.
“Each of our artisans must ‘get’ our ethos and be prepared to volunteer time in store for the opportunity to showcase their items with us. I believe this is a good business model and certainly works for us. We are entirely self-funded and rely on store sales to meet the normal outgoings associated with a retail business in contrast to other charities that rely heavily on grants to survive,” Michelle said.
As a professional business coach, Michelle also saw the retail space as an excellent opportunity to offer retail and business training for three intellectually disabled young adult women. These young women are excelling beyond what many thought they could achieve.
A Unique Vision for Nambour
Ultimately, the creative cooperative’s purpose is to gain community support for the charity’s vision. Located in the Nambour District, the aim is to construct a…
- 30 bay driving range
- 18 Hole Pitch and Putt
- Mini Golf
- Indoor Golf Simulators
- Events Centre
- Car Wash
GPAI President and PGA Golf Professional Darrell Dalton describes his vision for the disabilities sector and Nambour…
“The facility will be open to the public but its main purpose will be to offer training and work placement opportunities for the intellectually disabled. It will be a suitable venue to deliver our programs designed to Drive Inclusion and Break Isolation for Youth at Risk, the Aged, Intellectually and Physically Disabled and others.”
